BCM 240 – Week 9

The Attention capacity of my friend

On the lesson,we had learn about Hearing is reactive, while listening is strategic.When we are on sleeping, our brains also can recognize and categorize sounds. We will be so sensitive when we had hearing some unexpected noise even the voice are so weak. Our attention capacity were also reactive and strategic, so it can affect our sensory. Here is a task that i create for testing the attention capacity of my friend. Also it can prove the above concept.

Co-design Task

1. Prepare a peace of paper and a pen to my tester.

2. First task, Ask him to write “Best of all it is in Hong Kong” on the paper and count 1-23 by speak it out (in same time). The whole action need to timing, can’t over 60 seconds.

3. Second task, Ask him to spell “Best of all it is in Hong Kong” and write 1-23 on the paper(in the same time).The whole action need to timing, can’t over 60 seconds.

This task are going to test the attention will affect by their habit and their cognition.

The tester had used around 50 seconds to finish the first task. For the second task, he had used over 60 seconds.

The biggest dissimilar between task one and task two is the difficulty of spell the word and count number. Counting numbers is the most common thing on our society, even a children can do that too. But for spelling words, we need to have a basic understanding of those words. then we can spell it fluently. Our attention will be more used on something unusual, so we need to spend more time on it. Therefore, most of the media company will more prefer to have some unusual idea for their product, as they know that most of the audience will be attracted by some unique idea and that is the importance of the existence on creative.

BCM 240 – Week 7&Week 8

The influrence of TV program on people in 80s

Background

On the research, we will mainly focus on the experience of the audience in watch TV at 80s. As we know that, people in Hong Kong had create a lot of classic TV program and these people will keep to replay those TV program until now. We are going to study the reason that people have a deep connection to those TV program. Also, we will study the relationship between the people and those TV program . To find that how those TV series can be so attractive. On the other hand, we will also interview some adults (90s) which also love these old TV series. To find that how these TV series can attract them more that some new TV program. Then, we can understand the attracting point of these 80s TV program before the interview.

Related Works

For the research, we need to get know some of the 80s TV program. Here has some 80s TV series which were so popular and well know in Hong Kong, some of them will be called the classic TV series nowadays.

1.<<The Bund I>>

This is a TV series first broadcast on TVB in 1980 . The plot of The Bund were about a right fight story in 1920s. It mainly focus on the fight between Hui Man-Keung and Fung King-yiu. Keung had find his best friend-Ting Lik and help him to fight with Fung King-yiu. This series had find many famous actor, such as Chow Yun-fat, Angie Chiu etc. It is the most popular TV series on 1980s.

2.<<The Final Combat>>

The final combat is a wuxia comedy drama series which broadcast at 1989s. It got some well know comedy stars in Hong Kong, such as Stephen Chow, Richard Ng, Francis Ng etc.

3.<<The Justice Of Life>>

It is a story that to show the situation of 80’s society, whatever you are rich or poor, we all will did something wrong. But their story is to encourage people to stay have the faith that all people can also turn over a new leaf.

According to the news form Oriental daily, “The Justice Of Life” had broadcast at the wireless squat during the prime time at 2015s. In Hong Kong, their has around 330000 viewers watched it.

2.<<The Justice Of Life>> and <<The Bund I>> has been choose for the ten of best TVB TV series on these fifty years.

TVB had make a voting for people to choose the best and most want to replay TV series of these fifty years. <<The Bund I>> were the No.4, <<The Justice Of Life>> were the No.9.

 

Key Stakeholders

For the interview part, we will interview some people that born in 70s-80s, also we will find some people that had watch those TV series. We will ask the feelings when they watch the series and the most attracting point of the TV program. Then, we will recording these interview and add some introduction for the 80s TV series, make it into a video.

The Freedom of Speech in China

The freedom of speech, which is a basic human right. It mean the citizen can share their idea or opinion which had follow their own mind. Also, the Freedom of Speech will not affected by any others, including the Government. Nowadays, media has been grow up with a fast speed. We’ve got many of the media platform, those platform can help us to share opinion effecively. Besides, we can share our thoughts without any geographical restriction. In fact, there always got something to hinder us to have the freedom of speech, espically in China.

1989 Tiananmen Square protests

On 1989s, many students on China were concern about the problem of inflation and corruption. They had remind many other political problem and they have hold an assembly in Tiananmen Square. These students want to have a conversation with the member of Chinese Government. But the Chinese Government had ignore their petition. At last, the government had sent out their army and drive away those students. Alot of students had hurts and die in this protests.

But, on the history book of China, they had not much to talk about what happen in Tiananment Square protests. The students in Mainland China were not  konw anything about that protest. On the internet, people can’t remain something which about that protest. Most of the people were afraid of talk about that protest as the government were not allow them to give any opinion to the Tiananment Square protests. Also, if you were HuwaWai smartphone user, you will note that you can’t text any terms which had connected to the Tiananment Square protests in Wechat at 4th June, 2019, even you were using the network in Hong Kong. It has bring us a question, is the freedom of speech still work in Hong Kong?

Change Hong Kong into another China city?

Recently, there has a protests happend in Hong Kong. Many HongKongers were refused to withdraw the extradition bill, on june 9, over one million people protested in a mostly peaceful march. But Hong Kong government haven’t listen the opinion of these people. According to the CNN news, Lawmakers were set to debate the bill, which would enable China to extradite fugitives from Hong Kong, in a Legislative Council session on Wednesday morning. That meeting was postponed. Therefore, people has remove the protests into the next stage.

People in Hong Kong were mainly focus on as we had relase the power to the Chinese government, how can we still have all the human right, espically the freedom of speech in Hong Kong? Chinese government has already show the truth to Hong Kong people, they will suppress the freedom of people. We konw this on the happen of Lan Wing-kee, which is the bookseller in Hong Kong, he has missing in 2016 and we found him on mainland China. Chinese government had prosecute him another accusation. They were mainly want to punish him of he sell some book which had talk about some sensitive topic of China. It make us think that the China Government will take back the freedom of Hong Kong people at all costs and that is the reason that people they disagree with the withdraw the extradition bill, as they don’t want to lose there freedom.

Assignment 3 – 3rd Blog “The Robot”

On week2 blog, we had mention that how media set a image to animals and it is not respact to the animals. We started to concern about the right of animals and we care about their image on media. In addition, there got more and more robot on the society. They has became very useful on our daily life, some robot may has a outlook that very similar to normal human. It is the time that we should discuss about “is the robots should be given the right same as human.

Communication

When we creating an society or to build up our own culture, we must work with a group and communicate to each other. Reseachers at Carnegie Mellon University had gave two robots the ability to communicate, which is to prove their teamwork can make higher of worling efficiency. But it has show us that the robot can having a communicate function and this function has been widely used in factory industry . In recent years, some company had create the social robot. According to “Social Robot”(2019), social robot is kind of AI system, they create for communicate with human or other robot. They can become your friends even a family. If we apply this robot into the workplace, they can handle some work of customer service as they got the basic communicate skills. In fact, these robot were not really to communicate with us, they were based on their own system and find the most appropriate answer for the response.

Feelings

When human were communicating, they may not choose a appropriate response to others, it will create the conflict. This is the main reason that the robot can’t be list to a creature is they were no any feelings. Those social robot may give us response, they may show their “feelings”, but these “feelings” were not by themselves and it is all based on their program. These robot has still control by human, they not like human and do somethings  can’t explain, such as a mother can save her child and ignore all the danger. When we talk about the right, we will think that is apply on some kind of creature, such as the animals. But for the robot, they were not a creature, they were not actual to have a life. In general, we can call it a digital product.

Some people will say that robot is my friends or they are my family. But i need to clarify that they were treat them like a family or friend. In fact, some people had put their commitment fo spirit into those robot, just like a kids will said that Woody (Toys) are their best friend. We may help those robot to dress up, will talk to them. But we should understand that we just treat those AI robot as a human. They were not human in the reailty.

Nowadays, there has a lot of movie or TV drama which had use robot to their theme. Most of them will talk about a human fall in love with a robot. They will mention some miss understanding between human and robot as the robot truly to understand the feelings of human. Robot may replace us on workplace, but they don’t deserve to have the right same as human because they even not a creature. Besides, we can’t understand what they need as they don’t have their own feelings or mind, they all control by human. Therefore, on nowadays society, robot were can’t list to creature and we can’t give them any right. But, what if people can insert human mind into a robot on the furture, will people change their mind and choose to agree that they were human?

BCM 240 – Week 6

Nowadays, everyone got their own smartphone. People will use it everywhere. It make people had ignore the other things around them. Also, it will make us think that is those “other thing” still had got their own value or they had already to be the things which is not required. Here is a photo that i took at MTR platform. It had shown a situation that most of the people were only focus of their phone. Most of them were visit the social media platform. On the MTR platform, there has some screen that had play some news also the advertisement. But, people only focus on their phone. They had ignore the screen on the platform.

MTR had add many billboard around their platform since they open their train service. They had use some primeval billboard on 90s. As the technology had keep to grow up, they had add some screen for play the advertisement which is video. They had realized that video can more to attract people and it can improve the    effectiveness of those advertisement.  So, they had add the big screen and set it on the platform. They expect people will be attracted by these screen when they waiting the next train.

Unfortunately, the news and advertisement on the social media platform were more updated. User can more fast to get the news. Also, the social media platform got more type of news, they choose any topic which they were interest to. So, it bring as the question that is the billboard still had their own value? Maybe billboard has become useless for the promotion, more people will choose to post their advertisement on the social media platform, the cost of to have the online advertisement were less then have a billboard on the MTR station. They need to add more new function of the billboard and raise their own value.

A Cinema Experience

HKmovie App

Once i want to watch “Avenger : End game” with my friends. We got eight people, we need to decide a date and time that we all available. Also, we afraid that there has no ticket available as that movie were famous in Hong Kong. Therefore, we had open an app called – HKmovie to choose a session and buy the ticket by this app. HKmovie, Which is an app that can show all the playmate of any Hong Kong cinema.

 

1. First, choose the movie that the user want to watch and click it. Then, the user will go to the next  page which had show the date , time,place also the available sit.
2. Second, user need to find the session that they want and see is it had the sit that they want. It can help to make sure that the user to have a better experience.
3. Third, user need click the button for payment and use the system form that cinema to buy the ticket online.

 

The user of HKmovie can have a better experience on watch movie, as they no need to waste time to get the line and buy the ticket. They even had the time went to the washroom. If most of the audience can arrived the cinema on time, it will reduce the situation of they had block the views of other audience when the movie has start as they come late and they need to move into their sit. As user had choose a good sit, they can have a most comfortable posture when they watching movie. It can reduce the situation of they need to sit too front or too far away of the screen.

Most of audience will choose to watch movie on the internet. They think that it is more convenience and safe money. But the different between watch movie online and cinema is the cinema got more facility that can help the audience more to enjoy the movie.

The internet – 90s vs 10s

Internet got a lot of  change since 80s. These changes has bring us a lot of new media platform. Also, the development of tecnology has bring us the new digital devices and the new way for us to visit the internet. Form the computer move to the dumbphone, then move to the smartphone. In 80s,  we had use the 3G network, at now, we are using the wifi. To study these changes of internet, i had talk to my father and learn more about his view of internet changes.

In 1990, cell phone were not common and it is quite expensive. Only the rich men can bear that price. So, my father start to use cell phone since 2000s. Then he has get know about the internet form the phone. He konw that he can do the research on the internet, so he bought a computer then he can esaily to do the research. But, he can only do the research on yahoo, also the file archiving. At that time, my father has know that there have a media platform for watch video form his friends (YouTube) but he were not interested to because YouTube were not common on that time. Besides, my father more to prefer to watch TV while the TV show on that time were more diversified than the YouTube video.

In nowadays, most of us were using the smartphone more than the computer. Also, when we want to connect with the internet by our phone, we can use wi-fi or 4G network. On the next year, we may have the 5G network which is a more powerful network. We can easily to use the media paltform on our phone. It is makes those media platform more and more common.  My father has been surprise of the changes of YouTube. Nowadays YouTube has a lot of different type video, just like a  Large TV station, they got many chioce of program.  He got the same feelings on Facebook or other media platform. But he can’t adapt it in a short time as it has a lot of new function.

Assignment 2- 2nd blog “Animal”

When we get konw about the animal, we will divide those animals into different categories, for example:  Aggressive/ Not aggressive. In the pop culture, people will endow a image to the animal. According to ” The Most Overuesd Animal Stereotypes in Pop Culture”, in the fiction film or TV program , animals were symbolize things and they often symbolize the same thing over and over. She had mention an example – The crow. When the crow had shown in fiction, crow will be use to symbolize a dark portent of bad things to come.

These image will make people get misunderstanding to the animals. Such as bats, most of people think that the bats will fliy into their face and suck their blood because of they had watch some fiction movie and get misundertanding on it, for example, Batmen vampire theme movie. According to “Do Bats Drink Blood”(2009), most of the bats will not drink blood and they won’t attack people withou any reason. But nowadays we will usually use bats to symbolize vampire, devil or other dark thing.

Example

1. These image had give a worng cognition to the kid. When the kids thinking about the bear. Their first idea of bear is the Winnie the Pooh. The cute and lovely image of Winnie the Pooh had make kids forget that the bear in the reality. Bear is a aggressive animal, they will attack people if you were so near to them.                                                                    
2. The Sharks. I think most of us had watch the “Jaws”, which is the movie talk about some people has been attack by a big shark. At the story, the sharks will attack people without any reason and it is seems like to hunting people. That make people think that the shark will eat you when you so close to them. But in fact, sharks were not so danger as the movie said. According to Shark Attack Data(2016), there has only 144 case of shark attack which is fatal and unprovoked in America. Most of the shark attacks were non-fatal and unprovoked. Which means is the sharks had suffer the attack and they based on protect themselves so they fight back. As the record show on National Geographic (2015), there has 100 million sharks killed every year around the world. If the shark were so danger as the movie said, then the human must be more danger than the sharks. Therefore, should afraid ourself?

3. Rats were always symbolize to the theif  or dirty criminals in the movie. As we all konw, rats always sneak into our house, eat our food and they had carry diseases. So, on the movie, they must be dirty, vicious, criminal. These image form movie had change our cognition inperceptibly. We can recreate the brand of the things in media world. In The Great Mouse Detective, rats is a villain which is quite evil. In the reailty, rats just and animal and they will not do any evil things. So, the image of the rats in movie were not true.

4. Fox has been symbolize to a crafty character. At the movie called – Zootopia, Fox become a carfty person that he had defraud to many poeple to eurn money. But we don’t know the fox will to defraud people in reality. In fact, fox just an animal and they can’t be thinking just like human. Therefore, the crafty image on those movie were can’t represent the fox on the reality.

When we try to respect the animal, we need to  have the basic concept of them. These movie were giving some image which it is can’t represent those animal. That make us get misunderstanding to those animal. Is it good or bad for us to giving the new image to the animal on the media platform/ TV/ Movie?

Income Inequality and Pay Gap

 

Inequality?

On nowadays society, we can see a lot of inequality situation. As we’ve got many of social media, the speed of passing the news has get faster, those inequality situation were so easily to see throw on the internet. Here is a news on March which is talk about the four-day week-(without a reduction in pay), which is a policy had help the problem of gender pay gap and income inequality in Europe.

Gender pay gap

Gender pay gap is means the average difference of the pay between men and women. This is based on the subjective idea from their employer. They had subjectively to think that workload of men must be heavy then women. So, they think that it the pay of men should be higher than women. It had create a situation that the male employee no need to play hard on work and they can get a handsome salary. For the female employee, they may devote more workload, even more then male employee. But, they can’t get the pay that they deserve it.

Income inequality

Income inequality is means the disparity of income between the richest and poverty. For the poverty, they need to burden their living expenses also need to save money. When they need to pay more money on living expenses, they may need to cut down the sum of money for their saving plan. The richest, most of them were always think about how to earn more money. Some large enterprises will raise up their price of product. It had make some impact, such as they had raise up the living expenses of their customers. Therefore, the poverty can’t avoid the living expenses also the saving plan by their low income, their money wages of poverty were so hard to catch up the recent inflation. They had no chance to become a richest as they even don’t have the capital to start up their own business.

Four-day-week

Four-day-week is a new working system, the workers only need to work four day per week and there had no change of their income. It is a idea for reduce the stress of work, to keep the workers in a good mental state. Also, the costs of operating and environmental will decrease because of their office has close more time. It can become a win-win situation.

Result?

With the shorter working week, we can see through the work efficiency of their workers. It is a good chance of the workers to prove how much of their workload and the employer no more excuse to negate your work efficiency. According to Why the four-day week could help solve Britain’s inequality problem (2019), on a structural level this would lead to a significant reduction in economic inequality; time itself can be used as a way of ensuring that the gains of the economy are shared fairly with workers and communities. As hours are reduced, some of the profits of businesses can be effectively transferred to workers.

The potential and challenges for collaborative media ethnography

According to “The Chicago Guide to Collaborative Ethnography” 2005, to collaborate means, literally, to work together, especially in an intellectual effort.  At the ethnography, collaborate is the most improtant part of it.

Last week, we had to find someone older than us and talk about their memories of television watching in childhood. I had talk to my father and get konw with a famous variety show – Enjoy Yourself Tonight, which is a show similar to “In Melbourne Tonight”. It had broadcast in TVB Jade on 1967s. It is created by Robert Chua. Every weeknight 9:30 p.m, almost every household will open TV and it had play the  theme song of Enjoy Yourself Tonight. The show had include dancing, singing, short comedy drama and game section . As it can help people feel relax, it become the most popular TV show in Hong Kong.

So, what’s the influence of Enjoy Yourself Tonight? Why it can be the collective memory of 60s Hong Kong people?

In 60s, Hong Kong only got one television station, people have no chioce of TV show, they can only decide to turn on/off the TV. On that year, when people going off work, they will prefer they can take a rest at home. So, before they sleep, they will turn on th TV and get relax from those TV show. The broadcasts time of Enjoy Yourself Tonight is the weeknight. It is the time of people had already finish dinner and the the bath. There has not many original cantonese song in 60s Hong Kong, people were copy the melody of foreign pop song and use cantonese to write the lyrics. After the Enjoy Yourself Tonight has broadcasts on TV, they got one more platform to promote thier song. The music producer started to product more local song. Until 70s, we got more and more cantonese song in Hong Kong.
