Snow Piercer (2013)

Snow piercer (2013) is a movie that talk about the avarice also the selfhood of human. They had use a train with class system to make a metaphor of nowadays society. Male lead of the movie had live on the “economy class” at the train, he and his friends has a poorly treated on daily life. Such as they only have the “black cake” for their meal and they later had find that those “black cake” are made of cockroach. Also, their living place were so dirty and they must endure the bullying of the soldier on the train. When there had a “first class” person to take away their kids, they can’t say anything or they can’t do anything for resist.

When I had watch the movie, I find that it seems like nowadays society. The rich people will get the higher life quality and the poor people will get the lower life quality. Also, the number of poor people has keep to increase because those rich people will not share their own resource to them. In our society, seems there has no one want to solve the problem. Occasionally, we will have some demonstration to reflect the problem to the government/ some powerful person. For these demonstration, they were not resist for their poor states. They were resist for some people had abuse their power also they were deprive others right. In the Ellis et al (2011), we had know that the behaviour, value, religion were all based on our common sence. Just like the movie, when we look at the people who look like dirty or their clothes was rotten, we can sure that they were not rich. Then, we can judge that someone dress good, thay were the rich people. In our common sence, we konw that we all have different quality of lifestyle. We can compare the clothes of different people’s wear, the rich people’s clothes was made by high quality material and the clothes of poor people were so cheap. So, we no need to ask people how many money do they have? We can judge them by their out look.

On the movie, male lead and his friends were not care about to live at the last car. But they were care about why their status are so different of the first car people. The movie had tell us it is normal of there have some people being a rich people on this society, as we all have different talent. It is so normal that we have different levels of our property.

At the ending of the movie, the Korean girl and the boy had go out of the train. Initially, they were feel afraid of leaving the train and die because of can’t adapt the cold weather. But when they saw a polar bear, they see the hope of living at outside. So, they bravely to walk to the snowfield. It seems to tell us when we can ignore our own greedy and selfish and go to fight for our freedom and rights, at last, we will find the hope of living. But we must understand that, the process of having these thing will need to sacrifice many things, maybe the time, money ,even our life.

The end of world is a common topic on our society. The dicrector has use a story of we live on a train on the end of world to make a metaphor of the live based on Classism. It is more effectively to remind people what will happend if the classism has show on the end of world. To help us imagine that how’s the problem has bigger as it can effect our life.

  1. Oh Yes! In this movie, I can see a lot of unfairly treated, poor people need to eat cockroach cake. In your blog, you said “that it seems like nowadays society, the rich people will get higher life quality and the poor people will get the lower life quality.” that same as nowadays. people will compare the clothes of different people’s wear if you are poor then he showed impatient look other and attitude is really bad. also, people, the end justifies the means, we know that the process of having these things will need to sacrifice many things, maybe the time, money, even our life, but a lots people don’t care. But if you lost something maybe you can learn more.

  2. When I watched this movie, I think that it can reflect different types of human nature. Someone are brave; someone are stand on power; someone are care on friendship; someone are stand on righteousness. This movie show that our real world and the relationship between the citizen and the government. Also, we understand that if we do nothing, we will get nothing to improve our life. However, if we try to fight for the right, we will get the things that we actually need. Even though the process are long, we may lose somethings but we understand the outcome is more beautiful than the process.

  3. I think “Snowpirecer” is a very nice film that it is not only a disaster film, but it is also talking about humanity. When we are at the same situation with the character in the “tail class” what will we feel and what action will we have? Will we still want to fight and get to the first class? Or we just want to live in our comfort zone whenever this is not comfort? Actually, the train is a miniature of our society. There are many people in our society that someone is poor someone is rich. Maybe we will say that rich people got the resources but they will not want to share it to others which is poor, such that the story plot will be happening in our society. But when we are the rich people and if we stand at their angle to look back, I will ask why I need to share my resources with the others? Those are my things and I am not supposed to share with others. I am not talking about we should not share things with others because the share is a good virtue, I want to say that we are usually standing at the weak side and forget the powerful side! We should think about two sides and sometimes there are no correct or wrong. I love the part that you using autoethnography with this film to talk about why we will have the same point of view such as the looking of the people. Because we are following the same mainstream values of our society that we can easy to find out which is rich or poor while looking at their clothing.

  4. I really love that movie! In fact, this film portrays the world very accurately. It is simply the epitome of the real society. The people in the back compartments occupy the least resources but have the largest proportion of the population. There are not many people in the front compartment, but they stand the vast majority of resources and control. From this point of view, the essence of society is not the democracy, but the inconsistency. You can say that they demand equality, or they can say that they want to divide money into women. This film is about robbing resources. Even if the final result is that everyone can’t live, they must also rob or Revolution, because this is the real humanity.

  5. Love this movie! It reflects the classism on the society really well in the movie even it’s based on the novel which published in the year of 1982. It’s even worse when people judge the other just by their looks and give them the unfair treatments. Last semester, I was studying the local refugees for my visual essay and it’s sad to see them being treated differently because of their races, most of them are from the middle-eastern countries, they have to apply for the financial help from the government, however, the process is complicated and the rate of success of applying is rather low, a lot of them are living in some poor accommodations, they are also not allowed to have a proper job which couldn’t let them live fairly, also people would side-eyes them just because their skin color is different from us and the clothing they have are old or dirty. In this movie, we could see how the people cooperate with the Koreans although we clearly know the western people look down at the Asians, it tries to persuade, in hope to change their perspective because after all, we’re all living in the same world, we should accept each other because we are a family.

  6. Love the movie ending! I agree with your idea which we can be free if we put our greedy and selfish thoughts behind. But I think there is a bigger meaning in there. It is to not follow the ordinary system (which means the current sociality, or the train), be brave to create something new for our own and don’t follow what the sociality tell us to do so. We would be so much happier if we could live that way!
